| 2008-2009 Academic Year FLAS Fellowships |
Academic Year fellowships are expected to carry a stipend of $15,000 for the three quarters of the academic year and carry an authorization for full tuition and partial OSU fees.
Eligible Applicants:Applicants are eligible if they meet the following requirements:
- Full-time graduate and/or professional student in any department;
- Pursuing a course of study which requires advanced foreign language and area studies training;
- U.S. citizen or permanent resident;
- Student has not or will not exceed 260 credit hours of study in his/her graduate program.
- Combine language and area studies with professional training; and/or
- Study Less-Commonly Taught Languages; and/or,
- Intend to undertake intermediate or advanced language study and who have not yet achieved native language competence; and/or
- Are interested in a career with the U.S. Government.
For academic year awards, low priority will be given to candidates who have held a FLAS Fellowship during the previous academic year.
Languages Awarded through CSEES:*Note: Applicants are responsible for contacting appropriate language departments and establishing that their requested level of language instruction will be offered in 2008-09.
Requirements of the Fellowship:- Recipients must be enrolled in at least one 5 credit, classroom taught language course, which must be approved by the FLAS Coordinator;
- Recipients must be enrolled in at least one 5 credit, classroom taught area studies course, which must be approved by the FLAS Coordinator;
- Recipients must be full-time students, which is considered as 15 credit hours each quarter;
- Recipients are required to take a language proficiency examination at the beginning of the academic year and a language proficiency examination at the end of the academic year in order to gauge their language progress during the period of their fellowship;
- FLAS Fellows are also required to meet with their FLAS Coordinator during the first week of each quarter to discuss their course load and obtain approval of their program of study;
- All recipients are required to submit a report to the U.S. Department of Education at the end of their Fellowship period.
*Note: If a Fellow fails to meet any of these requirements, money may be withheld and/or he/she will be required to return the money given to them including payments for tuition and fees.
Where can a FLAS Fellowship be used?Most FLAS Fellows choose to continue their study at the Ohio State University; however, with some exceptions, OSU students may enroll at Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC) member institutions (the 11 members of the Big Ten conference, the University of Illinois-Chicago, and the University of Chicago), paying OSU fees or utilizing the fee authorization which accompanies each FLAS Fellowship award.
Students may also choose to pursue study at an institution abroad through the Ohio State University. All courses must be fully transferable to the Ohio State University, and all requirements of the Fellowship must be met. In addition, U.S. Government regulations require all recipients of a FLAS travel award to comply with the provisions appearing in the Fly America Act. Specifically, all tickets for overseas flights purchased with U.S. Dept. of Education funds must be on a U.S. carrier, unless the traveler is able to meet certain very specific exception requirements.
Application Procedures:
The APPLICATION DEADLINE is February 1, 2008 at 4:30PM. Applicants are eligible to apply for both summer and academic year fellowships. Contact the Center for Slavic and East European Studies with any questions regarding your application for a Slavic and East European FLAS Fellowship. No consideration will be given to forms that are incompletely or improperly filled out. Any application received after 4:30PM on February 1, 2008 will not be considered.
- The completed Application Form for the Center for Slavic and East European Studies FLAS fellowships. Application forms are available from the Center for Slavic and East European Studies (303 Oxley Hall, 1712 Neil Ave.) and are also available online.
- An official up-to-date transcript of all graduate courses taken and grades received (Note: first-year graduate students should also submit official undergraduate transcripts). Applicants for both summer and academic year fellowships need only submit one set of transcripts.
- A one-page single-spaced Statement of Intent (see page 3 of both the Summer and AY applications).
- Three letters of reference from faculty members familiar with the student's work, including language capability. Applicants for both summer and academic year fellowships need only
submit one set of references. - Completed Summer and Academic Year Language Instruction Budget Estimate forms.
