Organized by the Center for Slavic and East European Studies (CSEES), this workshop for in-service and pre-service teachers will be based around the theme of security in the Black Sea region, focusing on three countries, Georgia, Turkey, and Ukraine. The four and a half hour workshop will feature three, one-hour segments by experts that will give an overview of each country's history, culture, and politics, and a discussion of how these factors have impacted the country's current view of the world and relations with other countries. Dr. Ian Lanzilotti will discuss Ukraine, Dr. Gerry Hudson will focus on Georgia, and Trisha Myers will talk about Turkey. In particular, the workshop will seek to elucidate how these countries view themselves in relation to the European Union, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Russia, the United States, and other neighboring countries and influential actors. The final hour of the workshop will provide time for participants to aks questions and speak with the workshop presenters, as well as time to consider how information from the workshop might be integrated into the classroom and align with curriculum standards. All participants will receive a $100 stipend for successful completion of the workshop, Black Sea by Neal Ascherson, and a contact hour certificate. Lunch will be provided at the workshop.
