Recommended because of its famously unbiased news reporting. In addition to the latest news coverage from the region, this website contains a wealth of European links including country profiles and the BBC World Service radio broadcast, "Europe Today." Be aware of the fact that there is also a "Country Profiles" section that gives excellent background information on all countries, including the country's history as well as articles on recent developments.
Contemporary Radio

Recommended because To completely absorb the culture you can listen to contemporary russian music and speech. This radio station list includes everything from russian Rock to Hip-hop, it is also specialized by the city. Be aware of this website using Real Player.
Budapest Sun

Recommended because of its detailed news coverage of Hungarian politics, society, and business. Be aware of the "Style" section which contains lots of good Hungarian cultural reporting, including travel articles take you to historic and picturesque Hungarian cities. A very well-organized and quite comprehensive website.
Central Asia Caucasus Analyst

Recommended because this is a biweekly summary of news and analysis of events in Central Asia and the Caucasus. The "Analyst" is compiled at the Central Asia and Caucasus Institute of Johns Hopkins University. Article authors are scholars from around the world. The website contains an archive of past articles in addition to listing current ones. Materials include news, field reports, and analytical articles Be aware of the possibility that this website may be too advanced for most students as it has a very academic tone.
Czech Republic: Radio Prague

Recommended because from this website one can listen to English language broadcasts of Radio Prague, the official state broadcast of the Czech Republic. Start by scanning the Radio Prague website (in English) which also contains up-to-date news articles, as well as a wealth of information on Czech culture (for example, Czech beer!) and history. Be aware of the excellent section "Photo Tour of Prague," highlighting one of the most beautiful cities in Europe.
Hungary: Radio Budapest

Recommended because this website allows one to listen to the English language broadcasts of the official Hungarian radio service to the international world. Be aware of the fact that, unfortunately, this website does not contain written news and other information about Hungary.

Johnson's Russia List

Recommended because Johnson's Russia List is a comprehensive daily e-mail news service on Russian affairs. Each list contains articles and commentary about Russian politics, economics, society, and culture. Perhaps the best single source for what is happening in Russia today, especially since Russian perspectives (translated from the original Russian into English) appear alongside Western articles. Be aware of the fact that you can subscribe to the list by writing David Johnson at . To access past editions of the List, go to the List archive at the URL listed above.
Kiev Post

Recommended because of its comprehensive reporting of news from and about Ukraine. Despite the threat that freedom of the press is under due to the dictatorial policies of Ukrainian President Kuchma, the "Kiev Post" provides fairly objective news coverage. Be aware of the fact that you must register (free, but you are required to provide your e-mail address and other information) to gain access to most of the Post's articles.
New York Times

Recommended because both in terms of quantity and quality, the New York Times provides the best journalistic coverage by any US newspaper of Eastern Europe. This URL brings you to the NYT Europe page, so news articles on Western as well as Eastern Europe will be present. Also included are Associated Press stories on the region. Be aware of the fact that this website is searchable.
Online Newspapers Worldwide

Recommended because this is a great place to find listings of online newspapers from Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Start by clicking on the country of your interest in the Asia and Europe sections. Regional countries listed include Albania, Belarus, Bosnia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Georgia, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Ukraine, Yugoslavia. Be aware of the fact that most of the newspapers listed are in the national languages, but a few are in English.
Poland: Radio Polonia

Recommended because this is the official Polish state radio. Start by clicking on "English Section" to either listen to Polish Radio online or to read English language news articles, as well as number of other subjects like Polish history, Polish poetry, and the arts in Poland. Be aware of the fact that the same information is available in Polish, Russian, German, Belorussian, Ukrainian, and Esperanto.

Pravda

Recommended because this is the former official newspaper of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, but today has become a mainstream publication of the post-Soviet Russian press. Unlike The Moscow Times, this newspaper is not pro-Western, but rather more Russian nationalist in tone. For this reason it is very useful for a critical view of the US role in world politics, one that is shared by a clear majority of Russians. Be aware of the fact that articles are translated from the Russian into English and often the translations are a little rough, but still quite comprehensible.
Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty Newsline

Recommended because of its daily news report on the Former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. News stories are brief, objective, and focus primarily on political developments. Topics are divided into the following areas: Russia; Transcaucasus and Central Asia; Central and Eastern Europe; and Southeastern Europe. Be aware of the fact that one can receive the daily RFE/RL news reports for free by e-mail (write to newsline-subscribe@list.rferl.org) or the reports can be accessed on the RFE/RL website, which also has a newsline archive.
Russia: Voice of Russia

Recommended because this is the official voice of the Russian government. One can listen to broadcasts in English, Russian, and several other languages. Be aware of the fact that for the Russian government's perspective on news, Russian culture, history, etc., you can go to the Voice of Russia's English language website at http://www.vor.ru/index_eng.html.
Russian Radio

Recommended because this a Russian Radio station with latest music and every hour news broadcasts- great way to practice Russian lnaguage skills and interact with the culture. Start by clicking the yellow "Listen NOW" button and enjoy Be aware - it is all in Russian.
Slovakia: Radio Slovakia International

Recommended because this is the Slovak state radio service in English. the website contains a small news section and archive. There are also Slovak, Russian, German, French, and Spanish versions to this website. Start by clicking on "English" on the left side of the screen. Be aware of the fact that topics in this website include Myths and Legends, Tourism, History, and Culture, among several others.

St. Petersburg Times

Recommended because although this is another business-oriented (i.e., Western oriented) newspaper, it is valuable because it carries in-depth coverage of Russian news and features an excellent Russian arts and culture section. Be aware of the fact that there is a great "Special Features" section containing, among other subjects, a feature entitled "Russia's Last Tsar."
The Baltics Worldwide

Recommended because this is a half news/features newspaper, half tourist guide to the three Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. A commercial venture, the reporting is done with style and flair. The website contains a great variety of information, including historical maps of the Baltics. Start by simply looking at all of the various features of the website, including "Red Humor" (Soviet jokes). The number of different subjects is amazing.
The CDI Russia Weekly

Recommended because this is a good source of news articles on Russia and the former Soviet Union, both from Russia (in English translation) and the West. Basically the CDI Russia Weekly is a short summary of the daily Johnson's Russia List. The CDI Russia website is archived, so one can look at previous issues over the last several years and the archived issues are fully searchable as well. A tremendous source of information on Russia and the former Soviet Union, although it is much more weighted toward political and economic issues than social ones. The CDI Russia Weekly is a project of the Washington-based Center for Defense Information (CDI) and receives funding from the Carnegie Corporation of New York and the MacArthur Foundation. The Moscow Times

Recommended because this is the premier English-language newspaper in Russia. It has a decidedly pro-business and pro-Western orientation, so its editorial positions and reporting slant cannot be considered typical for Russia. Still, the quality of journalism is very high, and the paper often takes critical views both of Russian and American government policies. Start by looking at the Times' excellent editorial page by clicking on "Opinion."
The Prague Post

Recommended because of its weekly news in English, as well as commentary, and features from Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic. Articles about Czech cultural life are very interesting. Be aware of the fact that the Prague Post is not at all dominated by business reporting as are most of the East European online newspapers.

Transitions Online (TOL)

Recommended because this Prague-based news service provides objective and detailed news coverage of all of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, including Central Asia. Start by using the "browse by country" or "browse by subject" features located near the top center of the front page. Be aware of Be aware of the fact that unlike many of the business sector-oriented East European news services TOL is a non-profit organization that uses local reporters for its articles. Its mission is to strengthen independent journalism in the Region. A great source for regional news.
WarsawVoice

Recommended because this is a quality weekly newspaper reporting from the Polish capital in English. A wide variety of news stories is provided but most articles are relatively brief. Be aware of the fact that there are also good "Culture" as well as "Entertainment" sections, the latter which includes Polish language tutorials ("Polish your Polish").
Washington Post

Recommended because like the New York Times, the Post provides high-quality coverage of Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union. Start by looking at the country indexes (look for this feature in the right column and scroll down). Additional features include special reports, editorials, and commentary on the region. Central Asian news is located in the separate section, "Asia/Pacific." This site is also searchable. Be aware of Be aware the possibility that you may have to register to use the Washington Post site, but the process only takes a few seconds and you are not asked to provide any information (like your e-mail address) that could compromise your privacy.
