Summer 2018 and Academic Year 2018-19 Fellowship Competition

The Center for Slavic and East European Studies (CSEES) is now accepting applications for its Summer 2018 and Academic Year 2018-19 FLAS Fellowship Competitions. The deadline for application submittal is Thursday, February 1, 2018, 4:30PM EST. Please read below for specific information on the Summer 2018 and Academic Year 2018-19 Competitions. Applicants can submit applications to both the summer and academic year competitions.

  • Applicants will now need to submit their application online through Qualtrics.
  • Before beginning an application, undergraduate students should consult the PDF icon 2018-19 UG FLAS Info Sheet and graduate or professional students should consult the PDF icon 2018-19 Graduate FLAS Info Sheet for specific information on eligibility requirements and application instructions for their particular competition.
  • Before completing the Online Application Form, applicants should review the information sheets and information below to have all the necessary information on hand and additional documents ready for uploading as they complete the form. The Online form should take approximately 20-30 minutes to complete and should be completed at one time. A PDF icon FLAS Application Preview is available to guide applicants. Applications must be submitted online through Qualtrics itself.
  • In addition to completing the Online Application Form, applicants will need to have their referees submit letters of reference separately. Within the Online Application Form, applicants will indicate who is providing letters of reference for them. Then the applicant will complete the PDF icon 2018-2019 CSEES FLAS Recommendation Form and provide this to their referee. The referee will need to submit their letter of recommendation by Thursday, February 1, 2018.
  • A Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must also be submitted separately.
  • Failure to completely or accurately fill out the Online Application Form, submitting a FAFSA, and providing letters of reference by the published deadlines will cause the applicant’s application to be disqualified.

Announcement for Academic Year 2018-19 Competition Results

CSEES currently is a Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship granting institution under the U.S. Department of Education’s 2014-18 Title VI National Resource Center/Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship programs. These grants provide funding for FLAS Fellowships through Summer 2018. The U.S. Department of Education (ED) will issue a 2018-22 Request for Proposals for Title VI National Resource Center/Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship grants for which CSEES is preparing to apply. ED's timeline is unknown at this point. If received, these funds would provide support for Academic Year 2018-19 FLAS Fellowships. Due to the delay in announcing the Request for Proposals, CSEES will not know the results of this competition in March 2018. Fellowship competition results will not be made until the results of the Title VI NRC/FLAS competition are announced. The awarding of these fellowships is dependent upon the continued receipt of Title VI funding from the U.S. Department of Education. CSEES staff will keep applicants updated. Graduate students in particular are encouraged to discuss this with their home program and graduate program coordinator.

Information Sessions

The Center for Slavic and East European Studies will hold several information sessions about the fellowship in November and December 2017 and January 2018. Please read our Events Page for a full listing.
