12 students have received Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships from the Center for Slavic and East European Studies (CSEES) for the summer 2019 semester. The summer 2019 cohort of fellows come from nine different majors and programs across the university and have received funding totaling $97,077. Through a Title VI FLAS grant from the U.S. Department of Education, CSEES awards summer FLAS to undergraduate, graduate, and professional students who are enrolled in a degree that requires them to acquire advanced East European and Eurasian language skills. As part of the summer FLAS fellowship, students participate in an intensive language program, which gives them the equivalent of one year’s worth of study in six to 10 weeks. Matching funding from the Graduate School totaling $13,419 in the form of tuition and fee awards also made possible three summer awards to graduate students.
