Description: Being socially conscious and keeping up with both national and global news is an important part of being an informed citizen of the world. As young adults, we find passion and purpose in being activists for the issues that speak to our personal values, beliefs, and communities. In a time where information is readily available and an influx of negative news can be absorbed in a short period of time, it is important to recognize how our activism and compassion affects our day to day lives. There is nothing wrong with wanting to stay engaged, however, setting boundaries with ourselves on how we balance our compassion for others and our compassion for ourselves may be necessary to ensure that we can maintain our activism and passion over the long-term, and not at the expense of our own well-being. In this presentation, we will discuss what compassion fatigue is and how this plays a role in activism burnout. How can we maintain healthy boundaries to protect our mental health while staying in touch with the reality of these global events that hold significance in our life? Let’s talk about it.
