Job Opening: Student Curator of Graduate Student's Guide

Open laptop and book

Ohio State’s Center for Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies (CSEEES) seeks to hire 2 graduate student employees to develop an online module entitled “A Graduate Student’s Guide to Academic Workshops” in conjunction with the “Other Europes: (Hi)stories from the Edges of the Old Continent” workshop to be held at Ohio State on May 7 - 8th, 2025.

This workshop presents innovative historical interpretations of twentieth-century European history by pushing the boundaries of geographical fields and the conventions of disciplinary methods. Based on the pre-circulation and discussion of unpublished work-in-progress, the workshop provides a forum to enrich participants’ knowledge of Eastern European history, broadly defined, and facilitates the future publication of cutting-edge scholarly articles and books.

The chosen students will attend the workshop and participate fully in the paper discussions, with the view of creating a resource for other students who might attend similar workshops in future. The module should answer questions such as:

  • “How is a workshop different than a conference?”
  • “How does one provide and receive feedback on academic work-in-progress?” and,
  • “How is an historical article, book chapter, or book proposal developed over time?” among others.

Because the works-in-progress are proprietary to their authors, the guide will be methodological in nature and draw on experiential learning rather than summarizing the content of the workshop. Useful advice for future attendees of similar workshops is, however, essential and should be extracted from the experience and formulated for the public audience. The module should make use of freely available technology centrally supported and provided by The Ohio State University and technologies or computer programs readily available to the general public.

CSEEES envisions that the module could be in a variety of formats such as a blog/website, a PowerPoint slide video with embedded audio recording, an online video or podcast, online text with illustrations and citations, or a guided module. This module is the pilot project for a series of “Graduate Student’s Guides” to academic and non-academic skill-building activities.

  • Candidates must be familiar with the academic conventions of the disciplines of History and/or Slavic Studies.
