Coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the beginning of the fall of communism in Central and Eastern Europe, the theme of this year's Midwest Slavic Conference is “1989 and its Effects on Central and Eastern Europe”. Dr. Vitaly Chernetsky (U. of Kansas) will deliver the conference’s keynote address entitled “A Farewell to an Empire Revisited”, which will focus on cultural representations of the fall of communism in Ukraine and other countries in Central Europe. Building upon the keynote, a plenary panel will be convened on Saturday, April 6, from 8:30AM-10:15AM that will discuss the larger political, economic, and social impacts of 1989 featuring Dr. Krisztina Fehervary (U. of Michigan), Dr. Venelin Ganev (Miami U.), and Dr. Mark Svede (OSU).
The keynote and plenary panel are free and open to the public. To RSVP, please email csees@osu.edu by Wednesday, April 3.
