In April 2018, a month-long series of anti-government protests and marches led by Nikol Pashinyan resulted in the resignation of Serzh Sargsyan as prime minister of Armenia. Sargsyan had served as the president of Armenia since 2008 and sought to extend his time in office as prime minister. On May 8, Nikol Pashinyan was elected prime minister of Armenia, ushering in a peaceful transition of power to the Armenian political opposition in what has now been dubbed the “Velvet Revolution”.
This round table discussion featuring Emil Sanamyan (journalist and policy analyst), Pietro Shakarian (PhD student, Department of History at Ohio State), Dr. Artyom Tonoyan (research associate at the U. of Minnesota), and Karine Vann (journalist and editor for Armenian Weekly) will explore the revolution and its implications one year later. The event will start with a catered reception from 5:30-6:00PM, followed by discussion and a Q&A session from 6:00-7:30PM.
