The Midwest Slavic Association (MWSA) is excited to announce the results of the 2019 MWSA Student Essay Prize. The student essay prize competition is open to both undergraduate and graduate students and seeks to highlight the scholastic achievements of students in the region. This year, we recieved eight graduate and seven undergraduate submissions that covered a variety of topics and disciplines. In the undergraduate category, Alec Wood from Grinnell College was selected as the winner for his paper "Dionysian Ecstasy as Intrapsychic Narrative in Scriabin’s Late Sonatas". Madeline McCann from Indiana University was selected as the winner in the graduate category for her essay "The Neighborhood as a Site of Political Mobilization: Challenging Housing Renovation and Pension Reform in Moscow". Both students will receive a one-year membership to the Association of Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (ASEEES), and Madeline's paper will be entered into the ASEEES' Graduate Student Essay Prize competition.

The Midwest Slavic Association would like to thank and congratulate all the students who submitted an essay this year for their hard work and research. The competition is made possible through the support of ASEEES.
