Announcing the Publication of The Balkan Languages

After more than two decades of dedicated work, The Balkan Languages, co-authored by Drs. Victor Friedman (U. of Chicago) and Brian Joseph (Ohio State U.), has been officially published by Cambridge University Press. The book was released in print in the United Kingdom on 26 June 2025.
This comprehensive volume is also freely available as a fully open access publication. It can be read online or downloaded in full (with the exception of one section) using this link. An additional component—the 129-page bibliography—was released as part of the supplementary materials following the UK publication date.
The work offers extensive information on the languages of particular interest to scholars in Southeast European linguistics and culture, including South Slavic (with in-depth coverage of Bulgarian and frequent references to Old Church Slavonic), Eastern Romance (notably Romanian), and Albanian. Additionally, it addresses other relevant languages such as Greek, Judezmo, Romani, and Turkish.
The book's publication was made possible by a subvention grant from the Center for Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies’ Title VI grant.
