Discover Russia's Electric Power Sector in CSEEES' Newest Module

Power plant in Russia

The Center for Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies (CSEEES) at The Ohio State University partnered with an Ohio State graduate student to create an online module introducing K-14 educators and their students to key aspects of Russian economic and cultural development through the lens of its electric power sector.

The Electric Power Sector of Russia was created by Grigoriy Baranov, a PhD student in the Department of Agricultural, Environmental, and Development Economics. This guided curriculum module explores the structure and distinctive features of one of the world’s largest and most geographically expansive energy systems. It begins by introducing the energy sector of Russia and explaining the strategic significance of the electric power industry. From there, it traces the historical evolution of the Russian energy system, providing context for its development over time. The module then examines the current configuration and principles of the national power system, offering insight into how it operates today. It also presents detailed information about the energy sources used in electricity generation across the country, highlighting the diversity and complexity of Russia’s energy mix. Finally, the module addresses contemporary challenges and explores future development prospects for the electricity sector, encouraging students to think critically about sustainability and modernization.

By analyzing historical trends and modern dynamics, students will gain insight into how Russia’s energy sector has shaped and influenced the country’s economy, environment, and global role. The module aims to foster a deeper understanding of the interplay between energy infrastructure and national development.

These modules are part of a series funded by a U.S. Department of Education Title VI National Resource Center grant to CSEEES. Each module is designed as a self-contained unit that K-14 students, teachers, undergraduate students, or other instructors can use independently or integrate into their curriculum.
