Nicholas Breyfogle

CSEEES affiliate faculty member Dr. Nicholas Breyfogle (Department of History), has been named one of Ohio State’s inaugural Faculty‑to‑Faculty Mentorship Award recipients. The new university‑wide award, established by the Office of Academic Affairs, recognizes faculty who invest deeply in the professional growth, scholarly development, and long‑term success of their colleagues.

Breyfogle’s selection reflects nearly three decades of continuous, hands‑on mentorship at Ohio State. Known for his generosity with time and expertise, he is widely sought after for manuscript review, research development guidance, pedagogical support, and promotion‑related advising. His mentorship extends across departments and career stages, shaping the trajectories of faculty throughout the university.

As director of the Harvey Goldberg Center for Excellence in Teaching, Breyfogle has also led initiatives that strengthen teaching and foster collaborative, reflective pedagogical practice. His leadership has helped cultivate a culture of instructional innovation and peer support, reinforcing the university’s commitment to high‑quality, inclusive teaching. His contributions to teaching excellence were previously recognized with the Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching.

The Faculty‑to‑Faculty Mentorship Award celebrates forms of leadership that are often quiet but deeply consequential, all qualities Breyfogle exemplifies. His mentorship has had a lasting impact on colleagues’ scholarly productivity, confidence, and sense of belonging within the academic community.

Breyfogle and the other 2026 award recipients will be recognized on May 6 during Ohio State’s annual Faculty Awards Celebration.
