Colloquium Talk by Dr. Keith Doubt: On the Moral Significance of Affinal Kinship for Ethnic and National Identity in Bosnia-Herzegovina

Town divided by a river
February 26, 2020
2:00 pm - 3:30 pm
Ohio Union, Barbie Tootle Room

Drawing upon survey data and literature, the lecture by Dr. Keith Doubt (Wittenberg University) shows how the inhabitants of Bosnia-Herzegovina share a social solidarity that cuts across ethnic and national identities. Despite the war from 1992 to 1995 and the political structures of the Dayton Peace Accords which reify ethnic identities, there is a cultural identity in Bosnia-Herzegovina exemplified in strong in-law kinships, the marriage custom of elopement, and the interrelation of the two rituals.
