Presenter: Sonya Bilocerkowycz is a 2022 National Endowment for the Arts Creative Writing Fellow and the author of On Our Way Home from the Revolution: Reflections on Ukraine (2019), winner of the Gournay Prize for a debut essay collection. Bilocerkowycz's work has appeared in Guernica, Ninth Letter, New York Review of Books, Lit Hub, Los Angeles Review of Books, Colorado Review, The Normal School, and elsewhere. Before completing her MFA at Ohio State, she served as a Fulbright ETA in Belarus, an educational recruiter in the Republic of Georgia, and an instructor at Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv. At present she is Lecturer of English and Creative Writing at SUNY Geneseo.
Abstract: With the Maidan Revolution, the occupation of Crimea, and the start of war in the Donbas, 2014 was a watershed year in Ukraine’s recent history. This lecture will discuss developments in Ukrainian civic identity since 2014 and examine Ukraine’s ongoing resistance to Russia in light of the events of the last eight years. It will also consider the role of the literary essayist in mapping identity shifts and exploring decoloniality as both a personal and collective process.
