Russell Zanca, Professor of Anthropology from Northern Illinois University, presents "The Curious Ascendance of Nationalism in Central Asia." Nationalism has helped to define the political sovereignty of  five Central Asian countries that were once Soviet republics. But what advantages and disadvantages has nationalism brought for the prospective of peace and prosperity of ordinary people? Zanca explores nationalism as a major feature of state-building in Central Asia today and argues that Central Asia could benefit from greater regional cooperation.
