Elo-Hanna Seljamaa, Associate Professor of Estonian and Comparative Folklore, University of Tartu, Research Fellow at the University of Helsinki (and OSU/Mershon alumna) will join us for an informal, discussion-oriented presentation. As an international national university, the University of Tartu seeks to strike a balance between attracting bright international students and researchers and promoting Estonian language and culture. One of the outcomes of the internationalization efforts is the international master's program "Folkloristics and Applied Heritage Studies" that was launched in 2017 and attracts students from across the globe. At the same time, it fuels discussions about the purpose and price of internationalization and mobility as well as about international national disciplines in Eastern Europe.  Elo-Hanna Seljamaa is an Associate Professor of Estonian and Comparative Folklore, University of Tartu, and currently also a researcher at the University of Helsinki. Since earning her PhD from OSU in 2012, she has continued to study ethnic interactions, integration, and diversity in Eastern Europe. She recently concluded a four-year start-up grant about performative negotiations of belonging in Estonia and is currently involved in a University of Helsinki project about transnational memory cultures of Ingrian Finns. In Tartu, she directs the international master's program Folkloristics and Applied Heritage Studies.  This event is co-sponsored with the Center for Folklore Studies. Elo-Hanna Seljamaa will also speak at the Mershon Center for International Security Studies from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM. More information available here.
