Anne Garrels, an author and former NPR correspondent, will open the conference with a keynote address about her latest book, Putin Country: A Journey into the Real Russia. Over her 40+ year career, Garrels has devoted much of her time to reporting on the former Soviet Union, Russia, and other countries in Eastern Europe and Eurasia. Putin Country is based on Garrels' fieldwork in Chelyabinsk, Russia over a period of 20 years, experiencing and noting firsthand the changes in Russia politically, socially, and culturally. She will also address the challenges of reporting on Russia. Read more about Garrels work and field work in Russia here. This keynote address is open to the public, free of charge.
