Add to Calendar 2018-05-05 10:00:00 2018-05-05 14:00:00 The Rise and Fall of the Eastern Bloc Sport System The annual CSEES K-12 teacher training will host Dr. Steven Dawson (Wittenberg) on May 5, 2018, who will lead a session on the rise and fall of the Soviet and Eastern bloc sport systemHe will discuss the way sport was used as a political vehicle to promote the ideology of the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) and the German Democratic Republic (GDR).  Special attention will be given to how the government saw success in international sport as a way to place their society on the “world map.”  He will also discuss the goals of the government in terms establishing a “physical culture” that promoted sport for all, or a system structured solely for the development of the elite athlete.  Finally, we will analyze the demise of each system and the effect this had on sport, including the exposure of a sub-culture that encouraged and facilitated success at any price.Parts of Bryan Fogel's film Icarus will be shown in conjunction with this workshop. Participating teachers will receive $50 for attending with an additional $50 for teachers who complete a lesson plan based on the material presented in the workshop. Teachers will also receive a contact hours certificate.
