As a part of the Slovene Research Initiative, CSEEES is proud to present a screening of the film LGBT_SLO 1984 with an introduction and discussion by Joseph Valencic. Valencic represents Slovenian communities in the United States for the international advisory board of Slovenia's Government Office for Slovenians Abroad.
Synopsis: How did Slovenia, a small Alpine country, become a center for LGBT activism and queer culture? This new documentary reveals 35 years of the LGBT movement in Slovenia, starting in 1984 with the Magnus Gay Culture Festival, the launch pad for a greater social movement within the country. That vibrant scene built the picturesque capital, Ljubljana, into a haven of progressiveness and inclusion within the former Yugoslavia, only to encounter pushback after Slovenia declared independence.
Directed by Boris Petkovič in 2022, LGBT_SLO 1984 is 87 minutes long, and is in Slovenian with English subtitles. The film screening and discussion is FREE to Ohio State students, faculty/staff, and members of the public.
