Recent events in Ukraine have highlighted the importance of area studies and the present state of Russian, East European, and Eurasian area studies.  CSEES Director Dr. Yana Hashamova and political science professor Dr. Rick Herrmann were recently quoted in the article "Attention on Crimea Highlights Flux in Russia Studies" in The Chronicle of Higher Education.
