Yana Hashamova Receives AATSEEL Prize for Outstanding Contribution to the Profession

The Center for Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies (CSEEES) would like to congratulate affiliate faculty member and former Director Yana Hashamova who was recently awarded the American Association of Teachers of Slavic and East European Languages (AATSEEL) Prize for Outstanding Contribution to the Profession.
"Yana Hashamova, Arts and Sciences Distinguished Professor of Slavic Studies at The Ohio State University, is the recipient of the AATSEEL award for Outstanding Contribution to the Profession. She is an influential scholar who writes about urgent questions, looking at cinematic representations and current realities of gender and sexuality as well as mobility and identity in Russia and the Balkans. She is a teacher of popular classes and a mentor and advisor to graduate students. And as a leader, she has contributed to the field on every level. At Ohio State, she directed the Center for Slavic and East European Studies (CSEES) for 7 years and chaired her department for 8; she created new programs and obtained Title VI grants. In her region, she co-organized a critical race media literacy curriculum and seeded Russian language instruction for local public schools. Nationally, she led CSEES collaborations with colleges around the country. Most importantly, she has edited The Slavic and East European Journal since 2017 and worked to broaden its coverage to film and culture and to publish more theme-based issues. And beyond the English-speaking world, she has worked with colleagues in Europe to analyze contemporary representations of migration, human trafficking, and national identities. Her former student writes that 'Dr. Hashamova works tirelessly to help her students and colleagues achieve their professional goals while honoring their personal priorities.' Another nominator says, 'I cannot imagine a more innovative, tireless scholar and teacher who is dedicated to expanding the reach of Slavic Studies across disciplines.'”
Congratulations, Dr. Hashamova!
