In March, the Center for Slavic and East European Studies (CSEES) organized one of its largest teacher training workshops. 13 teachers from around Columbus took part in CSEES’ annual teacher training workshop for K-12 teachers held in conjunction with the Midwest Slavic Conference. These workshops are designed to help teachers integrate more content about Eastern Europe and Eurasia into their classrooms. The workshop focused on security in the Black Sea region, in particular the countries of Georgia, Turkey and Ukraine.
Gerry Hudson, Professor Emeritus of Political Science at Wittenberg University and a Mershon Center for International Security Studies associate, Ohio State lecturer Ian Lanzillotti, and PhD candidate Trisha Myers all gave hour-long presentations. After the presentations, a discussion on how to best incorporate the topic into curriculum and lesson plans followed with the CSEES outreach coordinator, Anthony A. Adame. Anthony also discussed what resources the center can provide for teachers and students.
CSEES provided lunch and drinks for the participants during the four-hour workshop. Teachers were awarded a stipend for participating and given a book, Black Sea by Neal Ascherson, to aid in any future lessons plans or curriculum. Teachers can receive an additional stipend for creating an original lesson plan based on material from the workshop.
