CSEES Releases Three New Online Modules

Student studying online at computer

Over summer 2020, CSEES worked with Dr. Theodora Dragostinova (History), Dr. Adela Lechintan-Siefer (Slavic and East European Languages and Cultures), and Dr. Lorrain Wallace and Steven Mousetes (both from the College of Medicine) on a new project that is part of CSEES’ Title VI National Resource Center grant that funds the creation of online modules. Dragostinova’s module, “From Population Exchange to Ethnic Cleansing: Forced Migration in 20th-Century Eastern Europe,” is a video lecture available on CSEES’ Youtube channel that explores the legacy and consequences of different case studies in Eastern Europe that are examples of population management and encourages users more critically to question the actual outcomes and experiences of those who are forced to migrate. “Youth Culture in Postcommunist Romania” is a website module created by Dr. Adela Lechintan-Siefer. Through the website, users learn about Romania’s higher education system, culture, and social activism and the role that they have played in the country’s transformation since 1989, with many links and resources given. The module created by Wallace and Mousetes, “Medical and Healthcare Innovation in Estonia,” is about the healthcare system in Estonia, providing background information about the country of Estonia and the major healthcare innovations that it has undertaken since its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. This module is also available on CSEES’ Youtube channel as a slide lecture with audio. All three modules are embedded directly in CSEES’ website as well.

The goal of the module project is to create easily-accessible, stimulating, and innovative online materials for educators to use in their own classrooms to encourage more teaching about the Eastern European and Eurasian regions at the K-12 level, as well for educators at community colleges, the general public, and students more broadly. More modules will be forthcoming.
