Łauma by Karol Kalinowski Added to Area Studies Centers Free Little Library
My selection for the Area Studies Free Little Library is the Polish graphic novel Łauma by Karol Kalinowski (also known as KaeReL). This story is told from the perspective of a young girl, Dorotka, whose family trip to visit her grandmother takes an unfortunate turn. After deciding to leave behind their busy and demanding lives in Warsaw, her family moves into her grandmother’s house in the village of Łomy. Dorotka's life quickly changes as she meets and befriends several spirits and mythical beings that live in the nearby woods. Her new friends later come to her aid when she has to confront the deadly witch Łauma who kidnaps children. This book is a playful and entertaining read that is filled with fascinating folklore that has been brought to life in a contemporary setting. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the Slavic Folklore class or the Yiddish Paranormal course!
The free little library is located in the fireplace area of Crane Cafe in Hagerty Hall and offers books in foreign languages supported by Ohio State's Area Studies Centers. The aim of the library is to encourage students to read in their language of study. Stop by to browse the catalogue and find something to take home (just bring it back when you're done!).
