On Wednesday, Dec. 2, Columbus North International School high school students visited The Ohio State University campus to attend a Russian language class. PhD
candidate Ray Alston led the Russian language class in instruction. The lesson’s theme was centered on the Hunger Games movies and a red carpet premiere. Students participated in an exercise of introducing celebrities on the red carpet as hosts would on television. This visit is part of the wider efforts of the Center for Slavic and East European Studies to promote the use of Russian language courses in high schools across the state of Ohio.
Columbus North International School Russian language teacher Gerrie McManamon had a lot of positive feedback after the visit: “I think it really motivated them to see that they could participate in a college level class. They were very excited to start working on the Olympiada once they returned to class.”
Language Program Coordinator Larysa Stepanova hosted the students after the lesson for a Q&A session in Hagerty Hall. The Center for Slavic and East European Studies and the Department for Slavic and East European Languages and Cultures provided tea, drinks and Russian snacks for the students.
The 2016 High School Russian Olympiada will be held on Saturday, March 12, 2016 at The Ohio State University.
